Written by Eban Goodstein | May 19, 2025

How can Americans build a sustainability career in Asia? Bard Graduate Programs in Sustainability recently hosted a virtual conversation with Matthew Guenther, VP of Corporate Sustainability at the garment manufacturing company TAL apparel, to discuss just that.

Based in Singapore, Matthew is a 2010 graduate of the Bard MS in Environmental Policy program, and has spent over a decade working in sustainability across Asia. In his current role at TAL Apparel, he leads corporate sustainability efforts for a company that supplies one out of every six men’s dress shirts sold in the U.S.

During the session, Matthew offered firsthand insight into:

  • What sustainability work looks like in Asia, particularly for American professionals
  • Cultural and professional considerations when working abroad
  • Emerging sustainability trends in the manufacturing and apparel sectors
  • Job search strategies for those interested in working in Asia

For anyone considering a sustainability career in Asia, the conversation is a must watch:
